A Season to Remember

When I called my mom Friday night after the game the first
thing she said was “I knew you wouldn’t have a voice.”
As a member of the varsity cheer team at Silverton High School
The feeling of standing in front of a large crowd and
feeling the excitement as we call cheers on Friday night is one of those
unbeatable feelings. The electricity from the stands is indescribable. It’s the
home games like Corvallis , Lebanon
As the rain poured down two weeks ago at the Lebanon
The stands were exploding with stomping feet, claps and
cheering that the masses of people were heard by neighboring establishments.
I myself have found that cheering for a quiet crowd isn’t any
fun at all. But when the crowd exudes enthusiasm the emotion can be felt by
everyone and the cheer team is truly thankful for that.
“When our crowd is loud and pumped, it gets our boys pumped
and we want them to feel like they are playing for something more than just a
high school football game,” senior cheer captain Kristina Vittone said.
“The difference from last year is that we have senior
leadership. Our seniors work harder and longer than anyone in the league.
That’s why we are where we are today,” senior football captain Lane Martin
said.
The football had a 7-2 finish before playoffs.
“It’s my senior year so it means more to me than last year.
I work harder and I know that all the seniors feel the same way. I don’t want
it to end,” senior football captain Julian Canda said.
Ending one of these games leaves me sounding more like my
grandpa than a cheerleader. Even with the sore throat the next day, it’s still
worth it to know I cheered my heart out and letting the boys know that the
cheer team, student body, and staff stands behind them 100 percent.
Senior Success: Anderson Places sixth

This season, she took sixth place at the 2011 5A state cross country meet at Lane Community College on Nov. 5. Her time of 18:54 for 3.1 miles is a school record. She took first place with a time of 19 minutes at the Mid-Willamette Conference District Meet.
“It’s like really big year for me,” Anderson said. “Being my senior year, I put in a lot of work this season. I put a lot of pressure on myself to do well this year.”
With Anderson’s leadership the Silverton Lady Foxes took fourth place at district, up from seventh place a year ago.

Cross Country

Boys Soccer
The Silverton Foxes boys’ soccer team experienced some major growing pains this year, finishing 3-11 overall and 2-5 in league. This was not due to a lack of talent, Head Coach Mark Jorgenson said with sophomore J'Rrett Baker earning second team all-league honors and sophomores Kellan Tracy and Patrick Doyle receiving all-league honorable mentions.“The team has a lot of young talent, which means we will win a lot more games in the coming years,” Jorgenson said. “The biggest battle we face right now is removing the losing mentality that has plagued this program for years.” “There is still a lot of room for improvement, but there is no doubt that the team that takes the field next year for Silverton High School will be the best the school has seen in a very long time.” Jorgenson said.
Girls Soccer
The Silverton Lady Foxes soccer team finished 8-7 overall with a 4-3 league record that earned the team a 4th place finish in the conference standings. Though the Lady Foxes pulled together mid season to win six matches in a row, they lost four out of their last five matches to end the season, including a play-in loss to Bend High school who was ranked #3 in the state. “I’m extremely happy with how the team worked together,” senior captain Madison Stadeli said, “we were supposed to be matched against a more comparable team, but the team had fun and scored three goals on one of the best team in state!”On her future soccer plans Madison says she plans to play intramural soccer as a way to, “keep my foot on the ball while maintaining my studies”
Volleyball
The Silverton Foxes volleyball team finished the year 6th in league with a 7-12, (6-8 league), record. The lady foxes lost their last game of the season on November 1st in a play-in game against Churchill. “We all worked really well together and had an overall enjoyable season,” junior Olivia Dahl said, “I can’t wait till next year!”
Football
The Silverton Foxes football team has inspired much passion in the Silverton area this season winning five games by a touchdown or less. Led by senior wide receivers Torrey Rogness and Julian Canda, the Foxes are in the OSAA 5A playoffs after a 8-2 season capped with two straight home upsets of #1 ranked teams Corvallis and Lebanon."This is unbelievable," Canda said. "We just came to battle, like we always do. This is what you want in your senior year."The Foxes won their play-in game on Nov. 4 with a 26-21 win against the Eagle Point Eagles. Their first playoff game is Friday Nov. 11 at Ashland High school. No results were available as of this deadline.After defeating Eagle Point Silverton Head Coach John Mannion had this to say, "I'm thrilled with how we've battled this year. We have a great group of guys who are fun to coach. And right now, it's just week to week.”

Dance Team Gets Second at State

The Silverton High School dance team member’s hope before going to the OSAA state championships was to place in the top three.
And the dance team did just that, placing second at state at the OSAA Dance and Drill Championships at the Memorial Coliseum March 18 and 19. The girls on the team include Brittney Brookfield, Faith Moen, Rachael Neff, Sirrissa Johansen, Sophia Johnston, Katherine Pilmore, Monica Steele, Leah Geck, Jordan Teeney, Carrissa Grambusch, Renae Stratton, Celeah Norris, Mckenzie Gray, and Baily Steffan. The team performed a lyrical dance to “Here Without You,” using the covered version by the Vietnam String Quartet. This year, the team did well, taking 1st place at the Category Championships held December 11 at West Linn High School for their Fall Jazz Piece.
Dance team is different from other sports as it requires the dancers to practice for the entire year. The dancers take classes at Silverton Ballet and Performing Arts, such as ballet, jazz, modern and hip-hop. Brookfield has classes at the studio four days a week, along with Friday, Saturday and Sunday practices for dance team. Most of the girls have been dancing together for years, with some of the girls having started dance at the age of three.
“I view it as a major accomplishment for sticking with it and I loved every minute of it,” Brookfield said. The seniors on the team include Brookfield, Johnston, Neff, Pilmore, Moen and Johansen, and most have been on the team all four years.
“I think that’s why we’re such a strong team due to how long we’ve known each other, danced together, and have been involved in each others lives,” said Johnston, a senior dance team captain.
While none of the girls are planning on being part of dance team in college, most are planning to continue dancing after high school.
When asked if they had any advice for next years team, Brookfield replied, “I would advise them to focus and work hard while still having fun!”

Silverton Foxes "Smoke and Mirrors"

The Silverton boys’ basketball began the season strong with a preseason record of 6-3. The team finished fourth in the 5A Mid-Willamette Conference with a record of 8-6, and an over all record of 14-9. The team consists of two seniors, five juniors and two sophomores.
“Smoke and Mirrors,” was this year’s slogan meaning what you see - a bunch of young undersized want-to-be-ballers - is not what you get - a close knit team of talented players with blazing speed.
The team, while inexperienced and undersized, had a successful season for being a “building year.” Three teams in the Mid-Willamette Conference landed in the elite eight 5A OSAA State Basketball Tournament – Corvallis, Woodburn and Crescent Valley.
The players look to improve next season with all of the returning talented players. This season was a big stepping stone for the team as it only had two returning varsity players: sophomore Zach Gengler and senior Daniel Roth.
The Foxes were lead by Gengler who averaged 22 points and 5 steals per game, and sophomore Toby Roth who averaged 13 points and 4 assists per game. Gengler was awarded first team honors on the Mid-Willamette Valley All Conference Team. Toby Roth received second team honors and Daniel Roth received honorable mention.
“We had two great sophomore guards who played well above their age and Daniel played a good senior role,” Coach Darren Shryock said.
When Shryock was asked if he changed the way he coached this team he replied, “A little bit. We were a little bit more lenient from last year. We weren’t quite as demanding of them on defense because of the lack of seniors.”
As this year comes to an end, the team has high hopes for next season “Getting past the first round of playoffs would be great! Also possibly a 360 monster dunk would be pretty sweet!” Gengler said.

Dairy Farmers of Oregon name academic winners
The OSAA recently announced winners of the Dairy Farmers of Oregon Academic All State honors for winter sports.
At Silverton High School, competing against all 5A schools: the boys basketball team took second-place with a 3.74 GPA; the girls basketball team tied for fourth place with a 3.76 GPA; the boys swim team took eighth-place with a 3.40 GPA and the dance and drill team tied for seventh-place with a 3.48 GPA.

How do you get involved with bowling? “Well, it’s a Silverton High School Club brought to us by Silver Creek Lanes, and you just sign up and pay your dues.”
When are practices? “Practices are Wednesdays from 3:30pm to 5:30pm and Saturday are league day s which means we get to bowl three games and better our average.”
Do you compete against other schools?
“Yes indeed we do. All schools from the Salem area, Dallas, Cascade, West Albany, South Albany, and a few from Portland.”
What’s the highest score you have ever gotten? “189, but my average is around a 140ish.”
Who do bowl with? “My home boy D-Train a.k.a. Dalton Sedivy, Devin Oei, Brandon Damewood, Traylor a.k.a. Taylor Bradberry, Eric Nasset, and Karen Witherspoon.”
Who is the coach? The A-team coach is Paul Holden, and the B-team coach is Guy Glennie.”
What’s the best part about bowling?“Well, what other sport can you eat curly fries and drink a large pop, while doing it? And of course its fun and a pretty rad sport.”
Do you plan to become a professional bowler? “It depends where life takes me, it would be cool, but pretty hard to compete against the best around.”

Oregon Going for National Championship

Perfection is something that the Oregon Ducks have never accomplished in their football history.
The best record Oregon had had before the win over Oregon State in the Civil War last Saturday, was 11-1 in the 2001 season after beating Colorado in the Fiesta Bowl and finishing No. 2 in the nation. That year Oregon was left out of the National Championship Game against Miami, and Duck fans were infuriated that they didn’t get a chance at the National Championship Game.
This year was totally different, and as Jerry Allen, the Duck announcer, said after the victory over Oregon State, “Can you believe the magical season this has become? And it’s not over.”
So, what about the National Championship Game? The Ducks will be facing the Auburn Tigers from Alabama and champions of the SEC (South Eastern Conference). They are led by Heisman hopeful Cameron Newton who has passed for 28 touchdowns and ran for 1400 yards and 20 touchdowns. Auburn’s overall offense is ranked No. 2 in the nation and Oregon’s offense is ranked No. 5. Oregon, though, is ranked No. 14 in defense in college football giving up only 18.4 points per game while Auburn is ranked No. 54 in the nation giving up 24.5 points per game.
The game will be played in Glendale, Arizona in the University of Phoenix Stadium, the home of the Arizona Cardinals. This matchup is the first between the two schools and the first for each to play in a National Championship Game.
In last week’s Civil War game the passion and rivalry ran deep. Families and friends were divided by their love for the orange or the green.
On January 10, let’s hope all of us will come together to cheer for one team, and watch the “magic” happen.

Cheer Team Sells Poinsettias
This holiday season you can buy a poinsettia for $14 and support the Silverton Cheer Team at the same time! The team is raising money for the winter sports season by selling them at every boys' and girls' varsity basketball game. You can also purchase them from any cheerleader during the day. Soccer teams receive sportsmanship award
The Silverton High School boys' and girls' soccer teams received the 2010 Sportsmanship Award from the Salem Soccer Referees Association.
The award is given to the school displaying the highest level of sportsmanship.
SHS Athletic Director Greg Kaatz said he has received a number of phone calls and emails from opposing schools expressing “their appreciation for a great soccer experience at Silverton High School. I would like the community to know that our student-athletes, coaches, parents, and facilities represent Silverton incredibly well.”

"Morgan Squared" competed at the OSSA 5A State Cross Country meet Saturday, Nov. 6 at Lane Community College in Eugene with both varsity athletes finishing in the top 40 runners in their individual races.
Junior Morgan Anderson finished 20th place with a time of 20 minutes, 18 seconds in the women's race out 95 runners.
Sophomore Morgan Coxen finished 38th place out of 94 runners in the men's race with a time of 17 minutes, 24 seconds.

Two runners to compete at state

Anderson took second place at the Mid-Willamette Valley District Cross Country meet on Oct. 30 with a time of 19 minutes, 37 seconds. Freshman Kelly Faulhaber took 17th place with a time of 21 minutes,3 seconds. The varsity girls' team took sixth place in league.
Coxen took third place at district with a time of 16 minutes, 29 seconds. The varsity boys' team took seventh place in league.
